Shipping instructions.
Currently, we recommend clients ship by USPS Flat Rate mail boxes only. A second preference is by United Parcel Service. Please do not ship by Fedex, as the nearest center is several miles from my location. Insurance is strongly recommended, especially for expensive or not-replaceable items. It is important that you include a properly filled out return shipping label so the only thing I have to do is simply place it on the outside of your mailing box.
Described below is the best method I have found for protecting and sending items that need sharpening. If you are a visual learner, please see the YouTube video at the top of this page.
- Lay out a dish towel length-wise and place all knives in the same direction.
- Fold the top edge back towards yourself to form a protective “pocket” for the knife tips.
- Roll them so they do not touch each other, starting from either direction—left to right or right to left—to form a scroll. It is OK if handles of large knives extend beyond the bottom edge of a dish towel. About 5 to 7 knives will usually fit well into a dish towel.
- Secure both ends with rubber bands or semi-sticky blue or green “painters tape”. Do not use duct tape, strapping tape or similar very sticky types of tape. Do not use newspaper to wrap knives individually; this takes more time to unwrap/wrap! Fill all voids in the box with enough crumpled paper (not plastic worms!) to avoid knife movement and tips from potentially slicing through the box.
- Place one or more wrapped dish towels into a Flat Rate mail box. Include your neighbor’s knives to share the cost of shipping!
- Be sure to include a pre-paid return address shipping label and a check that includes the $15.00 shipping and handling fee and insurance coverage (your option).
